Book Two
Isle of the Dragon
Synopsis
After being captured by pirates, Areanna and her sister Miriel, along with their friend Catriona, search desperately for a way to escape from their predicament. With the dark future of being forced into slavery hanging over them, the girls have no idea that their brother Feandur has gathered some friends and set off on a quest to rescue them from the pirates, passing through raging storms on the high sea to rescue his sisters.
In order to stall for enough time to come up with a plan to escape from their captors, Areanna informs the pirate captain of a treasure that the greedy pirates can't resist, located on a small island with a name that translates to the 'Isle of the Dragon'. But will this hunt for imaginary treasure turn into a deadly mistake? What lies for store for them when they reach the Isle of the Dragon? Will the rescuers be able to find them in time?
Excerpt
The sound of the branch breaking was, at that moment, the most terrifying sound that Darith had ever heard. The ten-year-old boy looked up at the branch that he was clinging onto. It was starting to crack under the weight of the ice coating it, as well as the weight of the boy dangling from it. He tried desperately to swing one leg up onto the branch, hoping maybe he might be able to inch his way back to the trunk of the tree before the branch broke off. It should have been sturdy enough to hold his weight, but Darith hadn't thought about the extra weight from all the ice covering the tree, which also made it more difficult for him to hold onto it. The pack of wolves that were gathered around the base of the tree had now been forgotten, with the appearance of this new danger. Darith hardly even thought about the ravenous creatures waiting below, because he was so focused on trying to climb up to safety from the cracking tree branch.
Below him was a rushing, ice-cold river. The edges of the river were frozen, but toward the middle, the current moved too swiftly for it to have frozen. If Darith's branch broke, he would fall directly into the river. He couldn't imagine surviving that, as it was so cold he might freeze to death before he ever got a chance to get out of the river, but even if he didn't freeze or something, he would likely drown, despite being a fairly good swimmer. He really didn't know if he might survive it, but he would much rather not have to find out. He considered trying to swing himself toward the tree and hope that he might be able to land on the bank, but the howling of a wolf suddenly reminded him of the other danger waiting on the bank of the river. The boy cast his fearful eyes toward the group waiting below. Even if he got did manage to swing himself safely onto the bank, the wolves would be on him in seconds. He would have no chance to fight them off; he was sure of that. So how was he going to survive this?
